Take a walk in Marans

Marans' hen

In the 12th century, Eleanor of Aquitaine brought part of the South West of France to England as a dowry. English rule lasted two centuries. English ships often called at Marans and landed roosters who had survived the battles highly prized by sailors to brighten up their isolation at sea. Raised in freedom, the local hens gleaned the cereals they found in the port. Quite naturally, their meetings created the race “Marans”. The hen of Marans has the nickname "hen that lays golden eggs". These eggs are actually chocolate colored. Come and discover them at the conservatory henhouse, free access throughout the year! adress : Chemin des enfreneaux

The Wind Mill ''Beauregard''

Marans was an important grain market and a major grain commercial port. The city thus had up to 11 windmills and 1 watermill. The Beauregard mill was in operation from 1628 to 1938. Its originality lies in its Berton system which allows to mechanically modify the wind resistance.
